Household cleaning products, personal care applications, coatings, and building materials have long used chemical biocides as in-can preservatives to protect products against spoilage.

But concerns are growing about the effects of synthetically produced biocides, like isothiazolinones, on human health and safety.

Corbion's lactic acid-based preservatives offer formulators alternatives that are effective, easy-to-use, label-friendly, and safe.

Our PURAC® Sanilac lactic acid preservative is compatible with other common detergent ingredients, including surfactants and alcohols, and boosts their in-can preservative performance. When formulated with chelating agents and alcohols (like IPA), it delivers potent efficacy and powerful biobased in-can preservation in cleaning and personal care formulations with a pH as high as 4.5. In combination with other preservatives, this solution is effective in formulations up to pH 6.5. The result enables both a lower eco footprint and increased efficacy.

Combining the strengths of lactic acid

Lactic acid is already widely used to bring superior dual-action antimicrobial properties to a variety of cleaning and disinfectant products, without taking a toll on the planet.

Our solutions can easily be fine-tuned to meet your formulation requirements by altering the concentration of lactic acid. For example, these adjustments can be made if you want to achieve higher antimicrobial efficacy and protect against a wider range of bacteria and viruses. Lactic acid also provides multiple cleaning benefits in a single ingredient by increasing the descaling power of refill cleaners and promoting streak-free cleaning.

In liquid concentrate applications, PURAC® Sanilac and other liquid lactic acid grades may be added without filler or biocides.
